We continue with the artist Kathe Kollwitz and in part 2 we invite you to explore art of the monochrome portrait. This session will be dedicated to easy carving techniques - for this we suggest you to get soft linoleum and carving tool as in the description below. You can also bring along a photo of yourself similar size of the linoleum, and if the linoleum is light in colour, you could use either tracing paper or carbon stencil paper to transfer your own photograph before carving it.

Fit for beginners.

A reference photo or mirror for adventurous artists

Linoleum for cutting like this

Meet the artist - Kathe Kollwitz. Learn the story of this talented lady and paint along with an unusual medium - bread. We wanted to make this session extra special as through using kitchen materials build a stronger connection with the artist and her oeuvre.

Materials: A4 or A3 plywood sheet (any 1 sheet, it will work better than paper, but paper will also work), wood charcoal/burned wood or charcoal powder, baguette (soft bread any), optional retractable knife, sanding paper, soft pencil or charcoal pencil, sharpie, any paints for an optional background colour, precision rubber eraser (sharp tip).

For the practical session, size zero or one sable or soft synthetic brush (tiny brush), brown or black and white ink (you may replace the ink with the brown and black watercolour and white gouache, or just a black and white poster, gouache or acrylic paint - please note that acrylic will be the last choice for this session) on toned violet, brown or grey paper. These are the two popular sessions grouped into one block dedicated to the mastery of one of the most famous portraitists - John Singer Sargent. The block includes two 1-and-half hour long painting sessions with tips by Anastasia Belous. First session is looking at Sargent on Paper, second session is exploring Sargent on canvas.

Fit for all levels.


For the first session, you will need a3 white or off-white paper (a thicker art kind will be a better option than cartridge paper), charcoal sticks or pencils, soft brush, some tissues, kneadable eraser. You could also work through this session with a set of graphite pencils - the softer kind. (3B-9B), In this case, you will also need a rubber eraser and some tissues. An extra piece of cartridge paper. Some fixative for charcoals or hairspray (optional)


For the second session, you will need a small set of oil paints (any), the simple colours you need is white, black, yellow, blue, red. bristle brushes (round or flat), odourless oil paint dilutant or turpentine. Optional: you may wish to use acrylics or poster paints instead. The study will be dedicated more to breaking the complicated form into simple planes of one colour, so you could also take part with other heavy-body paints of your choice.
You may wish to use individual oil colours that were used by John Singer Sargent:
Flake White, Mars Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Vermilion, Mars Red, Madder Deep, French Ultramarine, Cobalt Blue, Viridian, Emerald Green, Ivory Black, Raw Sienna and Mars Brown. Additional colours when needed included Chrome (Yellow) Pale, Cerulean, Red Lead, and Cobalt Violet.
You can work on a canvas board, a canvas or cardboard of any size. We suggest using a smaller canvas near A4 to A3 size.

The first session - The Pear - is dedicated to the 3d form - from monochrome to colour; the second session - The Onion - is all about colour and reflective surfaces; the third session - The Grapes - is a little more advanced, it includes the knowledge that we have got from the first two sessions and will explore the transparent things as well as matt and shiny surface of grapes. For the practical session, you will need a set of any paints and a medium canvas or paper. The colours will be yellow, red, black, white, and blue. (basic, the proper colours would be titanium white, mars black, ultramarine blue, vermillion, yellow ochre or natural siena, burn site and burnt umber). We suggest that you will go for the oils, but poster or gouache paints will be good too. A set of brushes - medium and small, round or flat, some water or turpentine. If you are using oils you can also use some linseed oil. A small to medium size canvas or paper, like A3.

We also suggest that you bring along a photo of a 'sitter" of your choice to paint them in the manner of the artist in focus.

About this event

This is going to be a delightful session for all to enjoy - a journey back in history to learn about impressionism from Ukraine and a famous artist Oleksandr Murashko.

Influenced by Diego Velasquez and a student of Ilya Repin, Oleksandr is one of the loudest names in history of Ukrainian painting. He founded Murashko school of art in his native Kyiv and has influenced a whole generation of artists.
His voice is still prominent today and we invite you to explore this great artist together with an artist and art historian from his native city, Anastasia Belous.

Explore the richness and the symbolism of the still-life painting from the Dutch Golden Age.
About this event

We would like to invite you this time to learn about the classical school of the Dutch still-life painting.

It will be a fruitful webinar boasting of unpronounceable names and artwork that you should see. Try to believe those aren't photographs but a fine example of a 16th and 17th-century painting. And it is a wonderful period indeed.
The webinar will begin with a short PP art history talk, that will be followed by a hands-on guided art class. Although those marvellous artworks were created in oils over extensive periods of time, we can create a mysterious still life with soft pastel chalks making it a shorter session of 2 very enjoyable hours.
Your workshop leader for this session is Anastasia Belous - a professional artist and art historian with several years of experience in leading practical art history courses for adults and children.

Marc comes from the small jewish town in the former Russian empire and now Belarus. Throughout his work we can feel the longing for going back home while in reality he was an outcast in the soviet state and found great success in the west. But more than that his paintings are full of eternal love - love that he held for his wife and his daughter. His sensitive primitivism is truly worth a special note. There is a story to everything. It's the first event in the series dedicated to the human body - the series is designed for adults only and will combine a talk and painting

We have scheduled a series of live art webinars for adults that are dedicated to the human body. In these, we will look at the flesh through the eyes of different artists such as Edgar Degas, August Renoir, Egon Schiele, and Francis Bacon. These will be led by Anastasia Belous and will look in-depth at what the body meant for famous artists in different periods, they will also look at the relationship with the opposite sex, or the same sex in the case of Francis Bacon, will look at the gender relations and how it showed through in the paintings of famous artists.
The selection of the Famous Artists webinars will be complemented with the in-depth study of a human anatomy - first the body - from skeleton to the skin, then - the hand. Both anatomy classes will be designed for older children and art-curious adults, but will be a great addition to the Human Body series.
